Plant-Based Eating Research is Solid

No doubt you see some new research every week about how plant-based diets have helped people lessen (or possibly eliminate) many of the major chronic diseases that plague them. Data show strong correlations of whole-food, largely vegan or vegetarian diets with reductions in heart disease, blood sugar issues (diabetes), obesity, autoimmune disease, and even many types of cancer. The creators of Thriving on Plants have achieved significant weight loss, lowering of blood pressure, and huge drops in blood sugar measurements (fasting glucose and A1C) within a few short months of adopting a diet comprised of 90% whole plants. We have been so impressed by the “power of plants”, we are anxious to share this journey with the world!

Being on Medications Was Killing Me

A couple of years ago, I found myself in the ER, very frightened and helpless.  I was suffering from a variety of unpleasant symptoms – dizziness, nausea, ‘spaciness’, fatigue, aches, trouble breathing, as well as severe anxiety about my state of health.  I had an IV in and many tubes of blood had been collected.  I was hooked up to all sorts of monitors and they would soon be taking me for a head CT.  Talk about a wake up call!  This was no way to live.  I was obese with high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and heart rhythm abnormalities.  I was prescribed 6 different medications (that I later learned were playing a large part in how terrible I felt).  Back then, it was a struggle to do anything.  I knew I had to make immediate and significant changes.  The very next day, I adopted a whole-food, plant based diet and began some daily movement.  It was very challenging and slow-going at first.  Yet gradually my taste buds changed and my body became more accepting of my new exercise habit.  Week by week, I felt better and better.  I lost weight and my lab tests were steadily improving.  My doctor was very curious about what I was doing as most of her patients only continue to deteriorate and are on medication for life.  My days are very different now.  Plant-based eating saved my life.

More About My Journey

I was trained as a scientist and have worked in medical research for many years. Modern medicine is indeed amazing with much to offer! I am very thankful for my studies and professional achievements over the years.   In parallel, I have also pursued studies in holistic and alternative health.  I feel that wellness includes not only the physical but the emotional, spiritual, and mental realms as well.  I am a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, a cutting-edge health coaching program that teaches that wellness comes from honoring each person’s uniqueness and that wellness comes from working to achieve balance in all areas of a person’s life.  As a health coach, I’ve supported many people in their journey of diet and lifestyle changes over the years.

A large focus of my work has been on helping people with their digestion and elimination.  Although not often discussed, I’ve found that many people struggle with gut issues – ranging from bloating after eating all the way to “leaky gut” and disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS).  Plant-based eating (done properly) can really help people to address these issues.  You’ll find a strong focus on gut health on Thriving on Plants.

Many People Might Benefit from a Plant-Based Diet

Much of the demise in modern health has arisen from the growth of large agribusiness as we strive for big profits and every day conveniences. Thankfully, many people are now seeking alternatives and diets based on whole, unprocessed foods (mostly plants) continue to grow in popularity. And for good reason! Great gains in wellness can be realized even from gradual changes in your dietary habits and lifestyle and Thriving on Plants is here to help you on your journey.  You’ll find information about how to prepare and enjoy whole plant-based foods as well as many “hacks” to make it “doable” and fun. We have recipes for you to try and lots of inspiration support your good habits for life. By adopting a diet primary based on whole plants, you’ll also be reducing the “carbon footprint” and being part in a viable solution for global sustainability.
